#passitonleicester ...

We held 31 events during September and recruited an amazing 2068 new lifesavers to the Anthony Nolan register..wow!

September was blood cancer awareness month and to mark it we ran no less than 31 registration drives, one on each and every day but we were not alone... read on to find out more!

Background and Aims…

The Rik Basra Leukaemia Campaign has run over 200 registration drives to date and counting… each year however we run a larger special event. Last year it was the ‘Race to a Thousand’ and you guessed it we registered an amazing thousand potential donors in a day… so this year we had to think of something even bigger… we came up with Pass It On Leicester.

Anthony Nolan recently mapped registrations across the entire country and amazingly Leicester and Leicestershire is second only to London for stem cell recruitment in the whole UK! We wanted to celebrate the generosity and support of the local community by putting together a campaign that gave everyone a chance to get involved. Our aim ultimately is to raise awareness of Anthony Nolan’s work and of course encourage people to sign up to the stem cell register.

The Concept…

September(2015) was blood cancer awareness month, to mark it we ran a registration drive on each and every day of the month… but we were not alone. We’ve co-opted the support of no less than 31 iconic ‘public spirited’ local organisations and community groups to help.

Each hosted a day, yes…we know there are only 30 days in September but such was the enthusiasm amongst prospective hosts that we had to double up on one of the days. You can see the full list of hosts here... I’m sure you will agree, they included many household names, drawn from the very fabric of the local community.

The twist…

We had a flag designed by ‘George’ (ASDA) that was passed in relay from host to host. Illustrated below, we think it absolutely captures the essence of the campaign.

The host for a particular day collected the flag from the previous one, but there was a further twist…

Capturing the imagination…

Each host collected the flag in their own inimitable style. Certainly we encouraged them to use their imagination and we had some fantastic quirky ideas including some very unusual modes of transport to collect.

Of course we also encouraged hosts to do something with the flag whilst they had it to capture public imagination…we weren't disappointed, some of the ideas were ingenious…take a look at the event pages!

We want to celebrate the tremendous work of the hosts too…

But it’s not just about the campaign we also wanted to celebrate the fantastic support of the community and that includes the hosts. We wanted them to use the opportunity to highlight what they do particularly to support others.

‘Pass It On’ in every sense…

Of course we are passing a flag on from host to host and we hope the relay and some of the fantastic plans hosts had for their individual events increased the profile of the campaign. We also hoped the community of Leicester would really get behind it and pass on and help spread life saving messages to others and ultimately encourage those that are eligible to come along and sign-up. We also made sure they and we have a great deal of fun along the way too.

Pride of place…

30th September saw us together with hosts and invited guests at City Hall where the campaign flag was formally handed over to representatives from the Leicester Royal Infirmary Bone Marrow Transplant Unit. The flag quite fittingly will take pride of place in the unit where we hope it will give hope and encouragement to those fighting their personal battles with this awful indiscriminate disease.
