Both eligible men and women can register but there is a particular need to recruit more men aged 16-30 as they tend to be bigger and produce more stem cells than women. Young men are overwhelmingly more likely to be chosen by clinicians as a match for a patient in need of a transplant but at the moment they only account for 12% of the donors on the register. Can anyone register?

No not everyone, there are some conditions which limit who can register and donate which broadly fall into two categories…

  • Sample Quality: Ensuring the quality of the stem cell donation gives the best possible chance of transplant success is a primary consideration. For example it is a statistical fact that the best outcomes for patients will accrue from donors that are aged 16-30 years. Registration with Anthony Nolan is therefore restricted to this age range. (Delete Blood Cancer however will recruit between the ages of 17-55).
  • Health Considerations: Donors need to be in good health; this refers to assessment of general health as well as current and past medical conditions. The simple review is designed to protect the welfare of both donor and recipient. Certain medical conditions will therefore prevent registration.

Want to do more or unable to register…how else can you help?

  • Pass on what you’ve learnt…Having read about the issues you can pass on the word and tell family and friends just how easy and non-invasive the procedure is. The more people know the facts the greater the chances of dispelling the immense amount of myth and misinformation that circulates and acts as a barrier to registration and donation.
  • Volunteer…The Rik Basra Leukaemia Campaign works to progress understanding of blood cancer as an issue within communities and encourages informed registration. It does this by holding awareness raising and donor registration events. We have many really dedicated and selfless volunteers who give up many hours of their valuable time to support this cause but we are always happy to hear from anyone willing to help. If you would be interested in volunteering please get in touch through our contact page, we will get back to you as soon as possible. If we are not holding an event in your area we may be able to signpost you to another group that is.
  • Hold your own registration event… Are you a community advocate in your area? Then you may be considering the possibility of holding your own registration event. Holding a registration event is not as easy as it sounds but it is of course possible with the correct infrastructure and support. The Anthony Nolan & Delete Blood Cancer Charities quite rightly insists on the highest standards to guarantee informed registration and integrity of saliva/swab samples taken. We have gained some knowledge in this area and compiled a toolkit to support event management. We would be happy to share our experience should you be considering holding an event, please make initial contact via our contact page.
  • Fundraise & Help us to do more… we run a continuous programme of events and awareness talks which comes at a cost, any financial support will help us do even more and develop our services. Go here to find out more.
